Chhattisgarh is known for its distinctive arts and crafts that mirror simplicity and traditions of the state and its people. They are one of the most interesting aspect of the State's offerings. The hand printing is generally done with the natural vegetable dye extracted from ail, found in the forest of Bastar. These fabrics include cotton saris – well-known as Bastar Kosa Saree, dress materials and drapes.





DHOKRA OR BELL METAL

Bastar and Raigarh districts of Chhattisgarh are known for Dhokra art, wherein bell metal is commonly used to make dull gold figurines. Tribes like ‘Ghadwas’ of Bastar and ‘Jharas’ of Raigarh practice this art form and bring products to life with lost wax technique or hollow casting. Each piece is custom made and no two pieces can ever be the same. The traditional technique of Dhokra is simple but requires great precision and each product, whether it is created for daily use or spiritual purposes, is intricate and detailed. One of the most popular crafts of Chhattisgarh, the excellence of Dhokra appeals to travellers from all over the world and this unique craft represents the state internationally.


TERRACOTTA

Symbolising fears and aspirations of the people, terracotta is closely related to the customs and traditions of Chhattisgarh. Terracotta figures are shaped either by hands or on the potter’s wheel and they depict different stages of the human life. The regions of Bastar, Raigarh, and Ambikapur are particularly famous for this art. The potters who practice this craft still use the ancient technique of making terracotta. They collect clay from river banks; break it; knead it and give them imaginative forms.


WOOD CRAFT

Wood craft is one of the most popular crafts in Chhattisgarh and it is renowned in various parts of the country. The tribes in Chhattisgarh initially used wood as a building material but later, they started using it for carving objects and carpentry. It led to the emergence of a community called the Badhais, which became proficient in wood craft. Today, Chhattisgarh and wood craft are inseparable and intricate wood carvings are often seen on doors, pillars, ceiling frames and furniture in the state. Life size images of Gods and Goddesses are particularly famous in Raigarh and Sarguja.


WROUGHT IRON

Wrought iron products surfaced out of respect of the tribes for their environment. Mostly made of recycled scrap iron, this craft is produced by beating metal in furnaces and then making shapes using tongs. The dexterity of the craftsmen is such that no joints appear in the products. Lamps, figures of deities, toy animals and effigies of musicians are some of the typical wrought iron products.


STONE CARVING/PAINTING

The God loving state of Chhattisgarh is emotionally and spiritually attached to the sculptures and carvings of its deities. The tribal stone craft reflects their aspirations and gives them a sense of security. Other than religious figures, the artists also carve memorial pillars and household vessels.Along the roads of Bastar one can see the Memory Pillars, which are memorials of Stone with painting depicting the important events of the departed souls life.


BAMBOO CRAFT

Bamboo is found in abundance in Chhattisgarh. Making optimum use of their forest reserves, the tribes of the state practice bamboo craft and create home decors and everyday products including table mats, wall hangings, baskets, table lamps, tools for hunting and traps for fishing.
