Symbolising fears and aspirations of the people, terracotta is closely related to the customs and traditions of Chhattisgarh. Terracotta figures are shaped either by hands or on the potter’s wheel and they depict different stages of the human life. The regions of Bastar, Raigarh, and Ambikapur are particularly famous for this art. The potters who practice this craft still use the ancient technique of making terracotta. They collect clay from river banks; break it; knead it and give them imaginative forms.

Wood craft is one of the most popular crafts in Chhattisgarh and it is renowned in various parts of the country. The tribes in Chhattisgarh initially used wood as a building material but later, they started using it for carving objects and carpentry. It led to the emergence of a community called the Badhais, which became proficient in wood craft. Today, Chhattisgarh and wood craft are inseparable and intricate wood carvings are often seen on doors, pillars, ceiling frames and furniture in the state. Wrought iron products surfaced out of respect of the tribes for their environment. Mostly made of recycled scrap iron, this craft is produced by beating metal in furnaces and then making shapes using tongs. The dexterity of the craftsmen is such that no joints appear in the products. Lamps, figures of deities, toy animals and effigies of musicians are some of the typical wrought iron products.

The God loving state of Chhattisgarh is emotionally and spiritually attached to the sculptures and carvings of its deities. The tribal stone craft reflects their aspirations and gives them a sense of security.
